The first section is what most people find difficult as this is the mental arithmetic section and is one where people feel the most pressure.

The mental arithmetic section is composed of 12 questions, all of which have to be answered in order and you can’t go back once it has been answered. The questions are read out over your head set, with each question being repeated twice. After the second repeat of the question candidates get 18 seconds in which to answer it, failure to answer it will just mean the questions is marked as wrong and you will not get another opportunity to go back to it. You don’t have a calculator for the mental arithmetic questions and the time pressure means that you have to memorise certain fraction, decimal and percentage conversion as well as be able to multiply and divide quickly.
