At QTS Maths Tutor we receive a great amount of feedback from people who have taken their professional numeracy skills test. In particular, we hear about questions students have found difficult or questions that appear to be new. Using this information we have created the most up to date questions to give you the edge in the real thing. We change the numbers but the type of question is very close to those that appear in the real exam.

Dates and Times Question

There are three siblings in a school. The youngest is 10 years and 8 months, the next sibling is 25% older and the eldest is 9 months older than the second oldest. If the youngest was born in January, what month was the eldest born?

A: June

B: September

C: July

D: August

Solution

Convert 10 years into months, which is 120 months. So the youngest is 128 months old. 25% of this is 32 months and the oldest is another 9 months older which makes 41 months older than the youngest child.

If the youngest was born in January then 41 months is 3 years and 5 months. If you add 5 months on to January, the eldest must have been born in June.

Answer = June
